of the material for this week’s episode

was inspired by Craig Groeshel‘s book The Power to Change,
Mastering the Habits That Matter Most.

0:00:16.920,0:00:23.340
Note: I will talk a lot about mental health, but
please note this is not a substitute for therapy

0:00:23.340,0:00:28.260
or mental healthcare. I am not a counselor
or a physician if you need help with mental

0:00:28.260,0:00:33.060
health challenges, please find a qualified mental
health professional, the title of this episode

0:00:33.060,0:00:41.040
is why you do what you do in this section and
Craig Groeschel starts out talking about change

0:00:41.040,0:00:48.180
and making positive changes in our lives and he
says a real change isn’t behavior modification

0:00:48.180,0:00:57.840
real change is spiritual transformation when
people think of changing they typically think of

0:00:57.840,0:01:08.160
behaviors they want to start or stop for example
for start meaning I want to start this habit or

0:01:08.160,0:01:16.080
behavior maybe I want to start reading the Bible
I want to start tithing I want to start being more

0:01:16.080,0:01:23.940
grateful saving more money being present for my
kids some stop behaviors meaning I want to stop

0:01:23.940,0:01:31.560
this Behavior maybe it’s a negative thinking
being late drinking too much procrastination

0:01:32.580,0:01:44.100
overreacting so exercise for this section is write
down things that you want to start and stop and

0:01:44.100,0:01:50.760
then if God told you that he would miraculously
change one thing in you what would you want it to

0:01:50.760,0:02:04.320
be a principle for this section is to experience
change that lasts focus on who not do Isaiah 43:19

0:02:04.320,0:02:13.260
in the NLT says for I’m about to do something
new see I have already begun do you not see it

0:02:13.260,0:02:19.260
I will make a pathway through the wilderness
I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.

0:02:20.460,0:02:30.240
So this idea, this concept of a spiritual who. You
do what you do because of what you think of you.

0:02:30.780,0:02:40.260
Proverbs 23:7 in the NKJV says, “For
as he thinks in his heart so is he.”

0:02:42.120,0:02:55.920
Craig Groeschel in his book says what does so he
is mean what is so he is mean uh who we are our

0:02:55.920,0:03:04.500
character shapes our thoughts about ourselves and
others what we think is a reflection of who we are

0:03:05.280,0:03:11.640
that then shapes Our Lives we have no
choice but to live out who we think

0:03:11.640,0:03:20.340
we are what we think within ourselves we are we
make decisions based on our self-identification

0:03:21.240,0:03:29.460
he goes on to say that research shows that when
making a choice we essentially and subconsciously

0:03:29.460,0:03:38.400
ask ourselves three questions uh the first one
is what type of person am I two is what kind

0:03:38.400,0:03:47.040
of situation is this three is what does someone
like me do in a situation like this so instead

0:03:47.040,0:03:56.160
of focusing on what you want to do decide who you
want to become James Clear author of atomic habits

0:03:56.160,0:04:04.500
says every action you take is a vote for the type
of person you wish to become no single instance

0:04:04.500,0:04:12.720
will transform your beliefs but as the votes build
up so does the evidence of your new identity Craig

0:04:12.720,0:04:20.880
groeschel says your self-identity is a primary
reason that you make decisions so another exercise

0:04:20.880,0:04:29.160
is he gives two statements and there’s blanks to
fill in those statements and he says when I blank

0:04:29.160,0:04:38.160
my underlying belief is that blank so here you
could go through some of your behaviors and and

0:04:38.160,0:04:45.780
do some reflection on when you you do certain
things what is your under underlying belief we

0:04:45.780,0:04:53.040
have a principle here it says you do what you do
because of what you think about you Mark 10 27 of

0:04:53.040,0:05:00.660
the NLT says Jesus looked at them intently and
said humanly speaking it is impossible but not

0:05:00.660,0:05:07.200
with God everything is possible with God that’s
all for this episode thank you for watching if you

Show Notes

Why You Do What You Do

Real change isn’t behavior modification.
• Real change is spiritual transformation.

When people think of changing, they typically think of behaviors they want to start or stop.

Starts (I want to start)
Read the Bible
Tithing
Be more grateful
Save more money
Be present for kids

Stop (I want to stop)
– Negative thinking
– Being late
– Drinking too much
– Procrastinating
– Overreacting

Exercise

Write down things you want to start and stop

If God told you that he would miraculously change one thing in you, what would you want it to be?

Principle

To experience change that lasts, focus on who not do.

“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭43‬:‭19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Spiritual Who
You do what you do because of what you think of you.

Proverbs 23:7 NKJV
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. …

“What does ‘so he is’ mean? Who we are-our character-shapes our thoughts about ourselves and others. What we think is a reflection of who we are. That then shapes our lives. We have no choice but to live out who we think we are. What we think within ourselves, we are. We make decisions based on our self-identification.” (Groeschel, 2023)

Research shows that, when making a choice, we essentially (and subconsciously) ask ourselves three questions:
•  What type of person am I?
•  What kind of situation is this?
•  What does someone like me do in a situation like this?

Instead of focusing on what you want to do, decide who you want to become.

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.”
—James Clear

“Your self-identity is a primary reason that you make decisions.”
-Craig Groeschel

Exercise

When I :
My underlying belief is that:

Principle

You do what you do because of what you think about you.

“Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭27‬ ‭NLT‬‬
