Pressure Release

Identify Your Coping Skills

Introduction

  1. Why do some people thrive under pressure while others seem to melt?
  2. What is the difference between a healthy mind and one that is overwhelmed by their challenges?
  3. What if the key to maintaining a healthy mind is not about luck or avoiding challenging circumstances or situations?

I. Introduction

A. Story of a house destroyed by a water heater explosion due to pressure buildup

It was like a bomb went off.

What caused the demolition of the house was a buildup of pressure from the water heater.

Water Heaters Rely on:

  • Pressure
  • High Temperature

An explosion typically occurs when one or both of these factors reach critical levels that cannot be resolved through safety measures like the temperature and pressure release value.

What happened?
The pressure relief valve was clogged.

The pressure built up until the pressure caused the explosion, destroying the house.

B. Importance of having a pressure release valve

If you want to keep pressure from destroying you, you’ve got to have a pressure release valve.

II. Coping Skills

A. Definition of coping skills

“Coping skills are the tactics that people use to deal with stressful situations.”
-Verywell Mind

B. Unhealthy coping skills are easier to learn
1. Examples of unhealthy coping skills
• Mindless scrolling through social media.

• Zoning out in front of YouTube, Netflix, TV, news, or some other form of screen-induced distraction.

• Defaulting to eating unhealthy food, drinking alcohol, shopping, gambling, pornography- or any other addictive behavior.

• Procrastinating on an assignment, chore, or task.

• Sleeping too much or too

• Withdrawing from relationships, people, and activities.

• Interacting with people in an aggressive, passive-aggressive, or conflict-inducing

C. Healthy coping skills require intentional learning
1. Examples of healthy coping skills
• Exercising and working out to release physical energy and increase “feel-good” chemicals.

• Sharing about your stress or problem with a trusted person.

• Getting professional counseling.

• Relying on your community or social network and connecting with others for support.

• Eating healthy and practicing good nutrition habits.

• Learning relaxation methods or practicing mindfulness?

• Setting healthy boundaries, learning to say no, and communicating what you need to others.

• Engaging in spiritual practices such as prayer, worship, and meditating on

III. Biblical Perspective

A. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
”We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

B. Assurance that pressure cannot crush us
This verse is a great reminder that no matter the level of pressure, we won’t implode. We may feel like it, but 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 shows us otherwise.

C. Importance of assessing and releasing pressure in a healthy way
Debra says, “You were not made to be crushed; you were made to overcome. And overcome you will. But to do that, you need to assess the pressure—and release it in a healthy way.”

IV. Conclusion

A. We are made to overcome pressure
B. Verse for reflection: 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; per-plexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).

why do some people seem to thrive Under Pressure
While others seem to melt what is the difference

0:00:06.840,0:00:13.440
between a healthy mind and one that is overwhelmed
by its challenges in this video we’ll talk about

0:00:13.440,0:00:20.480
relieving pressure more specifically about
identifying coping skills we’ll discuss how we

0:00:20.480,0:00:27.000
are made to overcome pressure we’ll look at what
the Bible says about pressure and a healthy mind

0:00:27.000,0:00:33.640
so stick around to the end of the video in chapter
17 of her book Deborah feda tells a story about a

0:00:33.640,0:00:41.000
picture of a two-story house that she saw online
now this house had been completely destroyed she

0:00:41.000,0:00:47.480
describes it as it was like a bomb went off all of
the finishes like the brick in the siding of this

0:00:47.480,0:00:54.080
house had been blown completely off and it was
stripped down to just the studs the windows were

0:00:54.080,0:01:04.120
blown out and you might ask what possibly caused
this sort of damage and to answer the question it

0:01:04.120,0:01:11.600
was caused by a buildup of pressure in the water
heater now some key information to understand is

0:01:11.600,0:01:18.840
that water heaters rely on pressure and high
temperature an explosion typically occurs when

0:01:18.840,0:01:26.240
one or both of these factors reach critical levels
that cannot be resolved through safety measures

0:01:26.240,0:01:33.160
like the temperature and pressure release valve.
So you may ask what happened? The pressure release

0:01:33.160,0:01:40.080
valve was clogged, the pressure had built up until
the pressure caused the explosion destroying the

0:01:40.080,0:01:51.640
house. So, this story further highlights the
value of having a pressure release valve not only

0:01:51.640,0:01:57.880
in your hot water tank but also in your life if
you want to keep pressure from destroying you

0:01:57.880,0:02:06.680
you have to have a pressure Rel Rel valve this
leads us to our next topic coping skills now a

0:02:06.680,0:02:14.160
simple definition by the team over at very well
mind says that coping skills are the tactics that

0:02:14.160,0:02:21.000
people use to deal with stressful situations when
you think about coping skills, you may gravitate

0:02:21.000,0:02:27.040
towards those unhealthy kind and it’s important
to note that unhealthy coping skills are easier

0:02:27.040,0:02:34.760
to learn some examples of these include mindless
scrolling through social media zoning out in front

0:02:34.760,0:02:45.120
of YouTube Netflix TV news or some other form of
screen induced distraction uh you may default to

0:02:45.120,0:02:52.760
eating unhealthy food or drinking alcohol shopping
or gambling pornography or any other addictive

0:02:52.760,0:03:00.120
behavior some other examples of unhealthy
coping skills are procrastinating on assignment

0:03:00.120,0:03:07.880
a chore or a task sleeping too much or too
little withdrawing from relationships, people

0:03:07.880,0:03:15.320
and activities other examples are interacting with
people in an aggressive or passive-aggressive or

0:03:15.320,0:03:22.040
conflict-inducing ways. So now, moving on to
the healthier kind of coping skills these

0:03:22.040,0:03:28.920
require intentional learning. Some examples of
healthy coping mechanisms might be exercising

0:03:28.920,0:03:35.240
and working out to release physical energy and
increase feel-good chemicals sharing about your

0:03:35.240,0:03:42.280
stress or problem with a trusted friend getting
professional counseling relying on your community

0:03:42.280,0:03:48.800
or social network and connecting with others
for support eating healthy and practicing good

0:03:48.800,0:03:55.000
nutritional habits. Some others include learning
relaxation methods or practicing mindfulness

0:03:55.000,0:03:59.720
setting healthy boundaries, learning to say
no and communicating what you need to others

0:04:01.160,0:04:08.200
uh engaging in spiritual practices such as prayer
worship and meditation, and that leads us to our

0:04:08.200,0:04:16.000
next topic which is the biblical perspective on
pressure if we look at 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

0:04:16.000,0:04:23.560
it says we are hard-pressed on every side but not
crushed, perplexed but not in despair, persecuted

0:04:23.560,0:04:30.040
but not abandoned, struck down but not destroyed.
This verse is a great reminder that no

0:04:30.040,0:04:38.160
matter the level of pressure, we won’t implode we
might feel like it at times but 2 Corinthians 4

0:04:38.160,0:04:44.760
8 through 9 shows us otherwise. Okay next up
you might think that it is common sense but

0:04:44.760,0:04:52.720
it is important that we assess our pressure
and release it in a healthy way Deborah Fus

0:04:52.720,0:04:59.720
says that you were not made to be crushed you
are made to overcome and overcome you will, but

0:04:59.720,0:05:06.640
to do that, you need to assess the pressure and
release it in a healthy way let’s review what

0:05:06.640,0:05:13.680
we’ve learned in this video we are made to
overcome pressure, the Bible reminds us in 2

0:05:13.680,0:05:22.200
Corinthians 48-9 that we are hard-pressed on every
side but not crushed, perplexed but not in despair

0:05:22.200,0:05:28.720
persecuted but not abandoned, struck down but not
destroyed. If you like the video, please give us

0:05:28.720,0:05:33.360
a thumbs up, and be sure to subscribe
