Welcome to The Overflow Podcast. My name
is Craig Booker. The title of this

0:00:05.220,0:00:10.680
episode is Start With Who. A lot of the
material for this week’s episode was

0:00:10.680,0:00:15.720
inspired by Craig Groeschel’s book the power to
change mastering the habits that matter most

0:00:16.500,0:00:22.920
note I will talk a lot about mental health but
please note this is not a substitute for therapy

0:00:22.920,0:00:27.900
or mental health care I am not a counselor or
a physician if you need help with mental health

0:00:27.900,0:00:33.480
challenges please find a qualified mental health
professional the title of this episode is start

0:00:33.480,0:00:42.060
with who in the last episode we talked about call
to who before do in this section of the book uh

0:00:42.060,0:00:48.780
Craig Rochelle starts out talking about how he has
a thing for nicknames and so you know if you work

0:00:48.780,0:00:55.500
with him he says you will end up with a nickname
you might not like it but that’s his thing so uh

0:00:55.500,0:01:02.880
it’s a very light-hearted fun story and you know
if we look back at the Bible you will see on many

0:01:02.880,0:01:08.280
occurrences that God has a pattern of changing
people’s names we can see that Abram became

0:01:08.280,0:01:19.620
Abraham Sarai became Sarah Jacob became Israel
and Simon became Peter uh so Abraham Abram’s new

0:01:19.620,0:01:27.660
name means father of many uh Sarah which is
sarai’s new name uh Sarah means princess or

0:01:27.660,0:01:35.940
mother of Nations Jacob means supplanter uh he
was the second born tricked uh and he tricked

0:01:35.940,0:01:42.840
his father Isaac into giving him Esau’s blessing
we have Gideon uh the angel showed up and said

0:01:42.840,0:01:49.800
the Lord is with you mighty warrior and that was
judges 6 12. so why did God change people’s names

0:01:50.580,0:01:55.980
uh this is a quote from Craig Rochelle and
it says because he knew who they truly were

0:01:56.820,0:02:04.020
who they would become and what they needed to
do Abraham and Sarai were going to have children

0:02:04.020,0:02:10.320
and become the father and mother of the nation of
Israel Jacob’s children would become the original

0:02:10.320,0:02:17.160
12 tribes of Israel Gideon would become the mighty
warrior who led God’s people into battle against

0:02:17.160,0:02:23.640
the midianites Peter would become a foundation
a stabilizing influence for the early church

0:02:24.540,0:02:29.820
all right in the book Craig Rochelle
says God changed their names because

0:02:30.660,0:02:37.080
change starts with your identity you do what
you do because of what you think of you for

0:02:37.080,0:02:42.480
them to do what they needed to do first they
had to think the right thing about themselves

0:02:42.480,0:02:50.340
he goes on to say for you to do what you need to
do for you to change you first need to think the

0:02:50.340,0:02:56.700
right thing about yourself you need to know your
true identity understand your true identity and

0:02:56.700,0:03:03.180
start with your identity you start with who
not do why because your identity drives your

0:03:03.180,0:03:09.660
behavior if you don’t start with your identity
any Behavior change you make won’t last all right

0:03:09.660,0:03:16.260
so we have an exercise and it says complete this
open-ended sentence with true aspects of your life

0:03:16.860,0:03:25.560
if today I lost blank I would feel totally lost
and not know what to do some examples he provides

0:03:25.560,0:03:34.680
is a job money social status a talent or a skill
and next one he says describe how each aspect of

0:03:34.680,0:03:40.440
your life you wrote down is connected to who
you are your identity and not just what you do

0:03:41.460,0:03:52.080
how can you turn each one of them each one from
do to who and how can you surrender that aspect of

0:03:52.080,0:03:58.200
your life to the point where if God took it away
you’d still be okay so lots of questions there

0:03:59.220,0:04:07.380
um another example for this part what he says
I feel like my career has become who I am not

0:04:07.380,0:04:15.060
just what I do but if I if I got let go or could
could no longer work I would still be a child of

0:04:15.060,0:04:22.200
God still have my life my calling and family
I would still have the most important things

0:04:22.200,0:04:28.860
in my life so the principle for this section says
to change you need to think about the right thing

0:04:28.860,0:04:34.080
about yourself know your true identity
and start your identity with who not do

0:04:34.680,0:04:40.080
in Philippians 1 6 of the NLT it says I am
certain that God who began the good work

0:04:40.080,0:04:45.780
within you will continue his work until it is
finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus

0:04:45.780,0:04:50.880
returns that’s all for this episode thank you
for watching if you liked the video give us a

thumbs up and be sure to subscribe so

Show Notes

Start With Who

God Changed People’s Names

    • Abram became Abraham

    • Sarai became Sarah

    • Jacob became Israel

    • Simon became Peter

Abraham – “father of many”
Sarah – “princess, mother of nations.”
Jacob – “supplanter,” The second born, tricked his father Isaac into giving him Esau’s blessing.
Gideon – the angel showed up and said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” Judges 6:12

Why did God change people’s names?

“Because he knew who they truly were, who they would become, and what they needed to do.”

Abram and Sarai were going to have children and become the father and mother of the nation of Israel.
Jacob’s children would become the original twelve tribes of Israel.
Gideon would become the mighty warrior who led God’s people into battle against the Midianites.
Peter would become a foundation, a stabilizing influence for the early church.

“God changed their names because change starts with your identity. You do what you do because of what you think of you. For them to do what they needed to do, they first had to think the right thing about themselves.”

“For you to do what you need to do, for you to change, you first need to think the right thing about yourself. You need to know your true identity, understand your true identity, and start with your identity. You start with who, not do. Why? Because your identity drives your behavior. If you don’t start with your identity, any behavior change you make won’t last.”

Exercise

Complete this open-ended sentence with true aspects of your life: If today, I lost [blank], I would feel totally lost and not know what to do.

Examples: a job, money, social status, a talent or skill

Describe how each aspect of life you wrote down is connected to who you are- -your identity and not just what you do.

How can you turn each one from do to who? How can you surrender that aspect of your life to the point where, if God took it away, you’d still be okay?

Example: I feel like my career has become who lam, not just what I do. But if I got let go or could no longer do that work, I would still be a child of God, still have my life, calling, and family. I would still have the most important things in my life.

Principle

To change, you need to think the right thing about yourself, know your true identity, and start your identity with who, not do.

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
-Philippians 1:6 NLT
