Welcome to The Overflow Podcast. My name
is Craig Booker. The title of this episode is Start Here –

0:00:06.720,0:00:13.040
It’s Time For A Reset. The material in this
episode is inspired by Reset by Debra Fileta.

0:00:13.040,0:00:18.320
I will talk a lot about mental health, but please
note that this is not a substitute for therapy or

0:00:18.320,0:00:24.720
mental healthcare. It’s a new year, and with it
comes a new beginning for many seeking change

0:00:24.720,0:00:30.920
in some areas of their lives. This change could
be a desire to get out of debt, lose a few extra

0:00:30.920,0:00:38.200
pounds, or improve physical fitness. Whatever
that may be, take a few minutes to reflect and

0:00:38.200,0:00:43.840
write those things down. Put it in your journal or
maybe a note on your phone. Maybe you want to make

0:00:43.840,0:00:50.000
changes that will improve your brain health. You
want to replace negative thinking with positive.

0:00:50.000,0:00:56.000
You want to work on relationships or build a
community of people around you. Perhaps it is

0:00:56.000,0:01:03.120
time to let another person in on your struggles.
The New Year might be a time to work towards the

0:01:03.120,0:01:10.120
career you have always dreamed of. We all have
areas of our lives that we want to improve. The

0:01:10.120,0:01:16.920
problem, according to Debra Fileta, is that we
go about this change all wrong. We may start

0:01:16.920,0:01:23.280
getting up early each morning, going to the gym, or
seeing a counselor. All of these are good places to

0:01:23.280,0:01:30.480
start, but within a few weeks, we find ourselves
slipping back into our old ways. In the first

0:01:30.480,0:01:39.360
chapter of Reset Debra Fileta encourages readers
to consider the apostle Paul in Romans chapter 7, verse

0:01:39.360,0:01:49.640
15 of the NKJV Paul says, “I do not understand what
I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I

0:01:49.640,0:01:58.400
hate I do,” end quote. We are all creatures of habit
which often means we return to old, unhealthy ways

0:01:58.400,0:02:06.560
of living. Debra says that if we look at this
verse, we see a key phrase, “I do not understand

0:02:06.560,0:02:14.360
what I do.” Whoa! Paul the author of a good part of
the New Testament makes a bold confession here he

0:02:14.360,0:02:19.840
doesn’t understand his own ways I’m not sure
about you, but I relate to Paul’s statement a

0:02:19.840,0:02:28.920
lot! Many times, I simply do not understand my own
ways. Why does this matter? Debra says, “…when we

0:02:28.920,0:02:37.000
don’t understand why we do what we do, we’ll find
ourselves doing the same things again and again.

0:02:37.000,0:02:43.800
Understanding why we do what we do, learning to
dig a little deeper, is paramount to changing our

0:02:43.800,0:02:51.560
behavior. There’s no way around it,” end quote. That
is huge! A big lesson here is that it is important

0:02:51.560,0:02:58.760
for us to understand why we do what we do. Debra
goes on to say, “…the people who end up having the

0:02:58.760,0:03:05.560
most success and their attempts to change and grow
are the ones who have an awareness of what’s going

0:03:05.560,0:03:13.280
on deep down inside underneath the surface,” end
quote. Breaking free from old unhealthy habits

0:03:13.280,0:03:20.360
starts with understanding our behaviors and the
patterns we continued going back to in Chapter 1

0:03:20.360,0:03:27.960
Deborah tells a funny story about a car she owned
years ago in college, the car had several problems

0:03:27.960,0:03:33.600
and when Debra took it to the mechanic, she
found out it wasn’t a lemon, as she had assumed

0:03:33.600,0:03:41.280
a few months prior, a friend of Debra’s had
installed her car stereo. And this friend had

0:03:41.280,0:03:48.320
mistakenly crossed some wires in the process
of installing the stereo, which led to a host

0:03:48.320,0:03:54.880
of other issues, maybe you can relate to the story
of Debra’s. You keep trying to change something in

0:03:54.880,0:04:00.960
your life, but you find yourselves going back
to those unhealthy patterns. Sometimes it can

0:04:00.960,0:04:06.400
feel like there is something seriously wrong with
you. Have you ever stopped to consider whether you

0:04:06.400,0:04:12.320
have some wires crossed underneath the surface?
There are times when we develop unhealthy or

0:04:12.320,0:04:21.760
untrue beliefs about ourselves, the world, or others
Debra gives us a pattern thoughts, lead to feelings,

0:04:21.760,0:04:29.200
which leads to behaviors. About halfway through this
chapter Deborah drops a huge life-changing truth

0:04:29.200,0:04:35.840
I’ll repeat it again: our thoughts lead
to feelings which lead to behaviors. If you have

0:04:35.840,0:04:44.600
ever done any gardening, you know that to get rid
of a weed, you need to pull out the roots, and all.

0:04:44.600,0:04:50.920
If you fail to do so, the weed will pop right
back up again. This same principle applies to

0:04:50.920,0:04:58.040
human behavior. If we fail to get to the root of
what we are trying to change, we’ll find ourselves

0:04:58.040,0:05:06.360
returning to the same old unhealthy patterns.
Debra says, “What’s happening in your mind is so

0:05:06.360,0:05:13.760
key to the process of transformation and change,
and knowledge of it (or lack thereof) ultimately

0:05:13.760,0:05:21.640
leads to why some people succeed and others
fail” end quote. So this is huge! It tells us

0:05:21.640,0:05:29.600
that our thoughts matter! If we want to see change,
we need to understand why we do certain things. We

0:05:29.600,0:05:36.960
need to take hold of our thoughts. Third, we need to
understand our feelings. If we do this, we can have

0:05:36.960,0:05:45.040
a real shot at making lasting changes. It’s time
for reset. As we explore the chapters of Reset, we

0:05:45.040,0:05:52.360
are going to take a look underneath the surface
Deborah Fileta will lead us on a journey toward in

0:05:52.360,0:05:59.640
her words, “owning our thoughts, understanding our
feelings, and changing our behaviors” end quote.

0:05:59.640,0:06:05.640
if you’re like me, you’re tired of doing things
the same old way and expecting different results.

0:06:05.640,0:06:12.560
it’s time for a reset. Debra cautions readers
that these changes will require ongoing effort.

0:06:12.560,0:06:19.920
The practices she will teach us in the chapters
ahead will involve a lot more than mere external

0:06:19.920,0:06:26.280
behaviors, these changes are much deeper and
will require more from you and me. I hope you

0:06:26.280,0:06:33.640
will tune in to future episodes to learn more more
about what Debra has to say about why we do the

0:06:33.640,0:06:39.840
things we do and how we can change our behavior
that’s all for this episode. If you like the

Start Here – It’s Time For A Reset

It’s a new year, and with it comes a new beginning for many seeking change in some area of their lives. This change could be a desire to get out of debt, lose a few extra pounds, or improve physical fitness. Whatever that may be, take a few minutes to reflect and write those things down. Put it in your journal or maybe a note on your phone.

Maybe you want to make changes that will improve your brain health. You want to replace negative thinking with positive. You want to work on relationships or build a community of people around you. Perhaps it is time to let another person in on your struggles. The new year might be a time to work towards the career you have always dreamed of.

We all have areas of our lives that we want to improve. The problem, according to Debra Fileta, is that we go about this change all wrong. We may start getting up early each morning, going to the gym, or seeing a counselor. All of these are good places to start, but within a few weeks, we find ourselves slipping back into our old ways.

In the first chapter of Reset, Debra Fileta encourages readers to consider the apostle Paul. In Romans 7:15 NKJV, Paul says, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” We are creatures of habit, which often means we return to old, unhealthy ways of living.

Debra says that if we look at this verse, we see a key phrase, “I do not understand what I do.” Woh! Paul, the author of a good part of the New Testament, makes a bold confession. He doesn’t understand his own ways. I’m not sure about you, but I relate to Paul’s statement a LOT! Many times, I simply do not understand my own ways.

Why does this matter?

Debra says, “…when we don’t understand why we do what we do, well find ourselves doing the same things again and again. Understanding why we do what we do, learning to dig a little deeper, is paramount to changing our behavior. There’s no way around it.” That’s huge! A big lesson here is that it is important for us to understand why we do what we do.

Debra goes on to say, “…the people who end up having the most success in their attempts to change and grow are the ones who have an awareness of what’s going on deep down inside, underneath the surface.” Breaking free from old, unhealthy habits starts with understanding our behaviors and the patterns we continue going back to.

In chapter one, Debra tells a funny story about a car she owned years ago in college. The car had several problems, and when Debra took it to the mechanic, she found out it wasn’t a lemon as she had assumed. A few months before, a friend of Debra’s had installed her car stereo. The friend had mistakingly crossed some wires in the process of installing a stereo, which led to a host of other issues.

Maybe you can relate to this story of Debra’s. You keep trying to change something in your life, but you find yourself going back to those unhealthy patterns. Sometimes, it can feel like there is something seriously wrong with you. Have you ever stopped to consider whether you have some wires crossed underneath the surface? The truth is there are times when we develop unhealthy or untrue beliefs about ourselves, the world, or others.

Thought -> Feelings -> Behaviors

About halfway through the first chapter, Debra drops a huge, life-changing truth. Our thoughts lead to feelings, which lead to behaviors. If you have ever done any gardening, you know that to get rid of a weed, you need to pull out the roots and all. If you fail to do so, the weed will pop right back up again.

This same principle applies to human behavior. If we fail to get to the root of what we are trying to change, we will find ourselves returning to the same old, unhealthy patterns. Debra says, “What’s happening in your mind is so key to the process of transformation and change, and knowledge of it (or lack thereof) ultimately leads to why some people succeed and others fail.”

Our thoughts matter!!

If we want to see change, we need to understand why we do certain things. We need to take hold of our thoughts. Third, we need to understand our feelings. If we do this, we can have a real shot at making lasting changes.

Start Here – It’s Time for a Reset

As we explore the chapters of Reset, we are going to take a look underneath the surface. Debra Fileta will lead us on a journey toward “owning our thoughts, understanding our feelings, and changing our behaviors.”

If you are like me, you are tired of doing things the same old way and expecting different results. It’s time for a Reset! Debra cautions readers that these changes will require ongoing effort. The practices she will teach us in the chapters ahead will involve a lot more than mere external behaviors. These changes are much deeper and will require more from you and me.
