Change Your Life – Change Your Habits

Note: A lot of the material is inspired by Craig Groeschel’s book. Each week, I take concepts from Pastor Craig Groeschel’s book, The Power To Change, and apply them to brain health.

“Your choices create the course and contours of your life. Your decisions determine your destiny.” – Craig Groeschel

“…your choices are less intentional and more habitual than you realize.” -Craig Groeschel

There’s a quote that some attribute to Aristotle that says, “We are what we repeatedly do.”

If you agree with the quote, this would mean:

Who you are, where you are, and the life you are living is largely shaped by your habits. [1]

Hope did not get us to where we are now, our decisions and our habits led us here.

“We are largely who and where we are because of our habits.” -Craig Groeschel

Exercise

Write down your daily routine.

Write down your routine, your rituals, and your habits.

Do not write down what you wish or hope to do.

Goal:

The goal of this exercise is for you to look at your routine because so few people ever stop and evaluate their daily habits.

Template:

Morning

Midday

Afternoon

Evening

Principle

If you want to change who you’re becoming, change your habits.

If you want to change where you’re going, change your habits.

If you want to change your life, change your habits.

Since Jesus went through everything you’re going through and more, learn to think like him.

Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. Then you’ll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want. -1 Peter 4:1-2 MSG

Hello and welcome to The Overflow Podcast. My name
is Craig Booker. The title of this episode

0:00:05.520,0:00:12.600
is Change Your Life? Change Your Habits. A lot of
the material for this week’s episode was inspired

0:00:12.600,0:00:19.260
by Craig Groeschel’s book The Power to Change
Mastering the Habits That Matter Most. Note: I will

0:00:19.260,0:00:24.900
talk a lot about mental health but please note
this is not a substitute for therapy or mental

0:00:24.900,0:00:30.300
health care I am not a counselor or a physician if
you need help with mental health challenges please

0:00:30.300,0:00:35.760
find a qualified mental health professional for
this episode it will be change your life change

0:00:35.760,0:00:41.820
your habits some opening quotes that he starts
with in this section of the book is your choices

0:00:41.820,0:00:50.220
create the course and Contours of your life
your decisions determine your destiny by Craig

0:00:50.220,0:00:58.080
groeschel another quote your choices are less
intentional and more habitual than you realize

0:00:58.080,0:01:04.020
all right so those are some quotes that frame
our discussion in his book there’s he mentions

0:01:04.020,0:01:11.640
a quote that some people attribute to Aristotle
that says we are what we repeatedly do and so if

0:01:11.640,0:01:21.720
you agree with this quote this would mean who you
are where you are and the life you are living is

0:01:21.720,0:01:28.500
largely shaped by your habits a big point of this
section is Hope did not get us to where we are now

0:01:28.500,0:01:34.920
our decisions and our habits led us here right
a quote by Craig Rochelle is we are largely who

0:01:34.920,0:01:40.800
and where we are because of our habits and this
week there’s not a lot at the beginning of the

0:01:40.800,0:01:46.080
chapter and so we’re going to dive right into this
exercise and go from there and so the exercise

0:01:46.080,0:01:52.320
says write down your daily routine to write down
our daily routine uh write down your routine your

0:01:52.320,0:01:57.060
rituals and your habits the point here is that
we’re not going to write down what you wish or

0:01:57.060,0:02:03.420
hope to do write down what you actually do and the
goal of the goal of this exercise is for you to

0:02:03.420,0:02:09.300
look at your routine because so few people ever
stop to evaluate their daily habits we just do

0:02:09.300,0:02:16.140
these habits because we’ve always done them but
largely most most people that have their habits

0:02:16.140,0:02:21.840
they may not know why they started them there’s
just not a lot of people that will that will stop

0:02:21.840,0:02:28.680
and salmon what they do each day and why they do
it so I provided a short outline or template for

0:02:28.680,0:02:34.080
this exercise identifying by different parts
of your day your morning maybe your midday or

0:02:34.080,0:02:39.780
around noon then your afternoon and evening a
lot of this has to do with our human nature we

0:02:39.780,0:02:46.140
get comfortable with certain routines we’re just
taking time to examine the things that we always

0:02:46.140,0:02:53.880
do hopefully bringing some insight into our habits
probably will take time to actually realize what

0:02:53.880,0:03:00.720
you do that is a habit I would encourage you to
take time and really break down your day and you

0:03:00.720,0:03:06.540
know this may take different iterations to figure
out different habits and stuff routines that you

0:03:06.540,0:03:13.080
have in different circumstances but I think it’s
worthwhile to examine what we do on a daily basis

0:03:13.080,0:03:19.800
if we true truly believe that our habits and our
decisions are what shape who we are and where we

0:03:19.800,0:03:26.520
are as a person so the principle here is if you
want to change who you’re becoming change your

0:03:26.520,0:03:31.440
habits if you want to change where you’re going
change your habits if you want to change your

0:03:31.440,0:03:38.100
life change your habits since Jesus went through
everything you’re going through and more learn to

0:03:38.100,0:03:44.520
think like him first Peter 4 verses 1 through 2
and this is reading from the message translation

0:03:44.520,0:03:51.600
it says think of your sufferings as a weaning
from that Old sinful habit of always expecting to

0:03:51.600,0:03:58.020
get your own way then you’ll be able to live out
your days free to pursue what God wants instead

0:03:58.020,0:04:04.260
of being tyrannized by what you want that’s all
for this episode thank you for watching if you

0:04:04.260,0:04:08.700
liked the video give us a thumbs up and be sure to
