This past week, our discussion was on goals. In the book The Power To Change, Craig Groeschel says, “As followers of Jesus, we want goals that are not about what we are getting or what we are doing but about who we are becoming.”
Quick Review
In past episodes, we have talked a lot about habits and identifying who we want to become, also known as our “who.” In this episode, we discussed two types of goals: means and who goals.
Means Goals
A means goal is something we want to accomplish to get or do something else.
Example: “I want to get good grades so I can go to a good college, so I can get a good job, and so I can make lots of money.”
Who Goals
A who goal is something we want to accomplish because it makes us more like Jesus or brings us closer to the “who” God has called us to become.
Example: “I start a new habit of eating right. Why? Because I am becoming more like Jesus. And when I eat right, I am honoring God by being a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19-20).”
Reflection
As you consider your goals, are any of them “means” goals instead of “who” goals?
If you are anything like me, I found at least one of my goals that needs a bit of tweaking. Check it out! 👇🏻
Original Goal
I want to eat right SO I can lose weight, SO I can be in better shape, SO I can get better sleep, SO I can reduce my baseline anxiety level.
New Goal
I began a new habit of eating right. Why? Because eating right equips me to advocate for the well-being of the Overflow Community and others worldwide.
