Let’s Review

1. Reframe Our Thinking: It’s important that we begin to see our bodies as containers holding emotions.

2. Find Your Why: If you lack motivation as to why this is important, think about both the short & long-term physical effects of emotions.

3. Tune In: Practicing activities such as performing a body scan can help us be in tune with what we are feeling and how our emotions might be affecting us physically.

have you ever wondered why emotions

0:00:02.280,0:00:06.720
cause certain bodily

0:00:04.080,0:00:10.800
reactions do you get hot when you get

0:00:06.720,0:00:14.200
angry does your skin get flushed red or

0:00:10.800,0:00:16.480
maybe your heart starts beating rapidly

0:00:14.200,0:00:18.720
have you ever had stomach or digestive

0:00:16.480,0:00:21.320
issues when you’re feeling stressed or

0:00:18.720,0:00:24.800
anxious perhaps neither of those appli

0:00:21.320,0:00:28.439
to you but this last one certainly will

0:00:24.800,0:00:30.480
perhaps the most well-known reaction to

0:00:28.439,0:00:33.440
an emotion would be

0:00:30.480,0:00:36.480
tears in this video we’re going to do

0:00:33.440,0:00:38.120
three things in relation to our emotions

0:00:36.480,0:00:39.879
we’re going to reframe our thinking

0:00:38.120,0:00:41.520
we’re going to learn how to see our

0:00:39.879,0:00:43.800
bodies and our emotions

0:00:41.520,0:00:46.640
differently two we’re going to find our

0:00:43.800,0:00:49.360
why we’ll talk about the short and

0:00:46.640,0:00:52.199
long-term effects of emotions on our

0:00:49.360,0:00:54.600
bodies third we’re going to tune in

0:00:52.199,0:00:57.640
we’re going to learn about ways to tune

0:00:54.600,0:00:59.600
in to what we’re feeling and how it

0:00:57.640,0:01:02.280
might be affecting us physically so

0:00:59.600,0:01:04.040
stick around at the end of the episode

0:01:02.280,0:01:06.159
first up we’re going to look at how our

0:01:04.040,0:01:09.200
bodies store

0:01:06.159,0:01:12.840
emotions now in this chapter Deborah F

0:01:09.200,0:01:16.080
gives this analogy about our bodies as

0:01:12.840,0:01:19.479
containers holding

0:01:16.080,0:01:23.040
emotions now you’re probably familiar

0:01:19.479,0:01:25.640
with how emotions make you feel but it’s

0:01:23.040,0:01:29.119
important to note that emotions release

0:01:25.640,0:01:31.560
neurochemical effects on our bodies and

0:01:29.119,0:01:33.759
we can look at this in two ways uh we

0:01:31.560,0:01:36.119
can look at our positive emotions they

0:01:33.759,0:01:38.439
release feel-good chemicals into our

0:01:36.119,0:01:41.240
bodies and we can look at negative

0:01:38.439,0:01:43.720
emotions these release stress chemicals

0:01:41.240,0:01:45.360
in our bodies all right let’s consider

0:01:43.720,0:01:47.159
the short-term physical effects of

0:01:45.360,0:01:50.640
emotions on our

0:01:47.159,0:01:52.360
bodies now you may know how these

0:01:50.640,0:01:56.000
emotions make you

0:01:52.360,0:01:58.560
feel but it’s important to note the

0:01:56.000,0:02:02.520
physical effects on our bodies for

0:01:58.560,0:02:06.680
example anxiety often causes stomach or

0:02:02.520,0:02:09.239
digestive issues anger will often cause

0:02:06.680,0:02:13.400
physical heat flushing or increased

0:02:09.239,0:02:16.239
heart rate third sadness often cause

0:02:13.400,0:02:18.400
physical tears which is a self- soothing

0:02:16.239,0:02:20.720
response all right let’s look at

0:02:18.400,0:02:23.360
long-term physical effects of emotions

0:02:20.720,0:02:25.920
on our bodies for this part I want to

0:02:23.360,0:02:29.080
break it up into two categories positive

0:02:25.920,0:02:32.200
emotions and negative emotions positive

0:02:29.080,0:02:34.920
emotions have been linked to longer

0:02:32.200,0:02:37.400
lifespans while negative emotions like

0:02:34.920,0:02:40.519
stress or anxiety can cause a whole host

0:02:37.400,0:02:43.440
of physical issues in our bodies I’m

0:02:40.519,0:02:47.120
going to give some examples of these but

0:02:43.440,0:02:50.400
there are a lot so first off memory loss

0:02:47.120,0:02:53.480
or cognitive impairment second an

0:02:50.400,0:02:56.440
impaired immune system which leads often

0:02:53.480,0:02:58.560
to frequent illness third would be

0:02:56.440,0:03:01.280
impaired heart function which would be

0:02:58.560,0:03:02.959
our cardiovascular system system uh

0:03:01.280,0:03:06.400
fourth would be impaired

0:03:02.959,0:03:09.920
gastrointestinal system you may recall

0:03:06.400,0:03:13.000
that in shortterm physical effects it

0:03:09.920,0:03:15.560
also affects our gastrointestinal system

0:03:13.000,0:03:18.480
here we see that it also has long-term

0:03:15.560,0:03:21.720
effects and fifth we see impaired

0:03:18.480,0:03:25.040
endocrine system think here hormonal

0:03:21.720,0:03:27.760
imbalances the body skin activity in

0:03:25.040,0:03:30.040
this chapter Deborah talks about a few

0:03:27.760,0:03:33.319
ways that the body skin activity has

0:03:30.040,0:03:35.920
been used for both children and adults

0:03:33.319,0:03:38.519
in her own practice she describes how

0:03:35.920,0:03:41.799
she has children drawn outline of their

0:03:38.519,0:03:43.920
body and then she has them color in the

0:03:41.799,0:03:47.120
areas where they feel certain

0:03:43.920,0:03:51.519
emotions she goes on to talk about a

0:03:47.120,0:03:54.799
scientific study where adults were asked

0:03:51.519,0:03:56.840
to color in emotions in their body in

0:03:54.799,0:04:00.480
response to visual stimuli that they

0:03:56.840,0:04:03.400
were shown the scientists used this data

0:04:00.480,0:04:06.360
to map out common emotions in different

0:04:03.400,0:04:09.519
parts of the body she goes on to talk

0:04:06.360,0:04:12.799
about how physical symptoms in our body

0:04:09.519,0:04:15.200
is the body’s way of signaling emotions

0:04:12.799,0:04:17.639
that need to be addressed all right

0:04:15.200,0:04:20.040
let’s talk about the importance of body

0:04:17.639,0:04:22.639
awareness scanning the body for

0:04:20.040,0:04:25.280
emotional tension is an important

0:04:22.639,0:04:27.919
process in this chapter Deborah talks

0:04:25.280,0:04:29.960
about a technique called progressive

0:04:27.919,0:04:31.880
muscle relaxation

0:04:29.960,0:04:34.520
now this is a technique that helps us

0:04:31.880,0:04:36.680
slow down and take time to pay attention

0:04:34.520,0:04:39.919
to how our emotions might be affecting

0:04:36.680,0:04:42.639
our bodies this exercise is meant to try

0:04:39.919,0:04:44.680
to help and relieve some of that tension

0:04:42.639,0:04:47.240
that we may have not been aware

0:04:44.680,0:04:49.600
of Deborah goes on to talk about a

0:04:47.240,0:04:51.199
common question that’s a asked in

0:04:49.600,0:04:52.440
different settings and that is where do

0:04:51.199,0:04:56.039
you carry your

0:04:52.440,0:05:00.080
stress now certain areas of the body

0:04:56.039,0:05:03.520
tend to tense up in response to other

0:05:00.080,0:05:06.400
underlying emotions and this process of

0:05:03.520,0:05:08.880
being in tune with our bodily signals is

0:05:06.400,0:05:11.680
important because it helps us to be in

0:05:08.880,0:05:15.160
tune with our emotions verse for

0:05:11.680,0:05:18.680
reflection Psalms 1391

0:05:15.160,0:05:21.400
13-14 it says you created me in my

0:05:18.680,0:05:23.919
inmost being you knit me together in my

0:05:21.400,0:05:26.280
mother’s womb I praise you because I am

0:05:23.919,0:05:28.520
fearfully and wonderfully made your

0:05:26.280,0:05:30.120
works are wonderful I know that full

0:05:28.520,0:05:32.160
well

0:05:30.120,0:05:34.440
let’s review what we’ve learned at the

0:05:32.160,0:05:36.560
beginning of this episode I stated that

0:05:34.440,0:05:39.759
we’re going to learn three things in

0:05:36.560,0:05:41.400
relation to our bodies and our emotions

0:05:39.759,0:05:43.919
first we’re going to reframe our

0:05:41.400,0:05:46.759
thinking it’s important that we begin to

0:05:43.919,0:05:50.039
see our bodies as containers holding

0:05:46.759,0:05:52.960
emotions two we’re going to find our why

0:05:50.039,0:05:55.199
if we lack motivation as to why emotions

0:05:52.960,0:05:58.039
are important we’re going to think about

0:05:55.199,0:06:00.479
the short and long-term physical effects

0:05:58.039,0:06:02.360
of emotions on our bodies

0:06:00.479,0:06:04.520
third we’re going to tune in we’re going

0:06:02.360,0:06:08.240
to practice activities such as

0:06:04.520,0:06:11.000
performing a body scan to help us be in

0:06:08.240,0:06:12.759
tune with what we’re feeling and how our

0:06:11.000,0:06:15.759
emotions might be affecting us

0:06:12.759,0:06:15.759
physically
