I hope you are doing well. This week, we wrestled with the question, how do we get unstuck? We also discussed the shame cycle we get in when we try to make changes in our own power.
Introduction:
This section opened with Craig Groeschel telling a true story about a thirty-five-year-old woman in Ness City, Kansas, that got stuck on the toilet for two years. Every day her boyfriend would take her food and water and ask her to come out. Each time her response was, “Maybe tomorrow.”[1]
So maybe you are not stuck on the toilet, but in one or more areas of your life, you find yourself unable to make changes.
It could be:[1]
- You are stuck spiritually, hoping to take things to the next level.
- Your fear is keeping you from spending time with your family.
- You are overweight and in poor shape.
- Maybe anxiety is ruling your day, week, or year.
We go about working towards a goal using willpower. The truth is that willpower is a limited resource, and it doesn’t work.
Why do we get stuck?
Here is what we have learned.
It could be because:[1]
- We put do before who.
- We try instead of train.
- We hope for change instead of starting (and stopping) the right (and wrong) habits.
- We do occasionally what we should do consistently.
After trying to change and failing, we get stuck in a shame cycle.
Reflection
- Are there places in your life where you feel stuck, full of shame, and ready to give up?
Remember
“We stay stuck because we rely on willpower instead of God’s power.”
