It’s All You – Introduction

hello and welcome to the Overflow podcast my name is Craig Booker the title of this episode is it’s all you a lot of the material for this week’s episode was inspired by Craig Rochelle’s book the power to change mastering the habits that matter most note I will talk a lot about mental health but please note this is not a substitute for therapy or mental health care I am not a counselor or a physician if you need help with mental health challenges please find a qualified mental health professional in this episode the title is It’s all you and so past weeks we’ve been talking about I can’t and then the next week which was last week was but God can and so when you put those together you get I can’t but God can this section which is titled it’s all you picks up from that uh and moves forward all right so Craig Rochelle opens up this section with a story about his friend Paco and his friend is not really named Paco that’s just his nickname for this guy that he works out with he lifts weights with him and so it’s kind of a humorous light-hearted story which uh it seems to be the trend lately in this section is just these really funny stories that he tells and so he calls this guy Paco and what makes it more confusing is you know Paco calls him Paco sometimes so he’s telling this you know story to open this section how the two of them were at the gym and they were doing what’s called a chest burnout right and so I’m not really an avid weightlifter surprise but uh after after they were lifting a bunch of very heavy weights it said the process of doing a chest burnout is you lift a bunch of heavy weights and then you switch to like a a lower weight and you perform what they called high rep bench presses so uh maybe you’ve been doing like some really heavy weights and um that’s got you tired and then you switch to like maybe like the bar that’s what they were doing is they switched and went down just to the bar which I think is like 45 pounds and so at the end he’s just trying to do as many as he can with just the bar all right so you got this picture of Craig Rochelle at the gym with his friend I don’t know what his friend looks like but I I imagine it was a pretty funny sight uh for what he was doing after he went and did a bunch of like bench pressing a bunch of heavy weight and then they switched to just the bar and he was trying to do like 50 reps with just the bar and so you know if you’re just starting out lifting weights like just lifting the bars not a whole lot and may look kind of silly uh but after you’ve been doing really heavy amounts uh doing a lot of reps with just the bar can seem like a lot and so he goes through this and you know he’s really struggling Craig’s really struggling to push up the barn his his friend Paco’s like encouraging him you know he’s telling he’s you know yelling at him keep going it’s all you and so he’s sitting here pushing up the bar and he talks about how he gets to I think 30 and then 40 reps and by 40 reps he’s just totally spent uh he’s just real tired and what he noticed was his friend Paco that was spotting him was you know he had the bar and so he just lets go Craig lets go of the bar and magically the bar keeps going up and down as Paco’s lifting it and and Craig Rochelle is doing nothing like he’s just sitting there and Paco’s like encouraging him cheering him on not realizing what’s going on until he like looks down and sees that Craig is not actually pushing on the bar and they all just burst out laughing laughing and so just a really fun way to set up this section and this idea that it’s all you because Paco is telling Craig it’s all you it’s all you when Paco is obviously lifting the bar you know it it sets up this section this topic really well a quote from Craig Rochelle it says at the end of my power I discover God’s power his power is always there when I am weak he is strong he says willpower doesn’t work but God’s power does and his power is available it’s accessible it’s active and it’s abundant Galatians chapter 5 verses 16 and 17 says so I say walk by the spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh for the flesh desires what is contrary to the spirit and the spirit what is contrary to the flesh they are in conflict with each other so that you are not to do whatever you want all right so we’ve been talking about habits start new habits we’ve been applying this to mental health depending on what you’re trying to accomplish in your life your habits will look different probably than my suggestions or my ideas like my examples but you know as we’re working through these habits we’re trying to start things that we’re trying to stop some unhealthy habits and how we get to a point where the newness of the Habit wears off uh what was driving us before is no longer really driving us as much uh we may be questioning why we started this new habit like we’ve gotten that far away from the beginning uh we’re losing motivation we may be losing enough energy to complete this and so we’re realizing that our willpower is limited and that we need God’s power to do our habit to get through the day you know we’re learning to reach out to God and say I need your help I can’t do this on my own you know no matter what your new habit is you know if it’s surrounding your struggle with brain health you know that adds another complexity to it um and so in this section we’re we’re really digging in um to this idea that it’s the title is It’s all you but it’s really not it’s it’s really God that is stepping in and sustaining us so uh here’s a quote it says the spirit so we just read Galatians 5 16 and 17 where we’re talking about walking in the spirit versus the Flesh and so here we’re kind of breaking down the two different ideas of the spirit and the flesh so it says the spirit is the holy spirit God in us when you give yourself to God he gives himself to you he moves inside of you like the cream filling in a Twinkie he lives inside you to empower you to live the life he has for you.

Craig Groeschel says Paul also wrote the Flesh like the Greek word is uh trans or the Greek word flesh is sarks like s-a-r-x and it’s used 149 times in the New Testament.

So that’s the term the Greek for flesh and it says uh part of you wants to lead you in a way that you really don’t want to go in a way God doesn’t want you to go that part of you explains why why you keep doing what you don’t want to keep doing as in I don’t want to keep gambling I don’t want to keep talking about people behind their backs I don’t want to keep looking at that website I don’t want to keep feeling jealous I don’t want to keep spending more money than I have on things I don’t even need I don’t want to keep wasting my life scrolling through photos of other people’s lives you know you could say I don’t want to keep you know struggling with whatever you’re struggling with surrounding brain health right this could be a lot of things and he ends that with I don’t want to but I do so there’s a struggle going on you know and they’re talking about the writings of Paul and if you read through the writings of Paul you see the struggle that Paul went through you know we’ve talked about it in the past few weeks of he doesn’t want to do these things but there’s something in him working against what he really he wants so Philippians 3 3 NIV says for it is we who are the circumcision we who serve God by a spirit who boast in Christ Jesus and put who put no confidence in the flesh.

Craig Groeschel says, in other words, we put no confidence in our willpower.

So he translate that translates that to something more applicable to what we’re talking about uh when we talk about willpower and how it’s a limited resource so he’s applying Philippians 3 3 to say we put no confidence in our willpower.

Galatians 5:16 NIV says, “So I say walk by the spirit and you will not Gratis gratify the desires of the flesh.”

All right, so we have walking by the spirit rather than the flesh is a decision to live overcome our self-destructive habits and pursue our goals not in our power but in God’s. Because we can’t, but he can.

So here the the Greek word translated walk is Paradio or patio uh hopefully, my right pronunciation is good.

It’s a present tense verb that means you keep doing it walking by the spirit is something you can never stop doing like breathing or preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Craig’s humor mixed in there.

So let’s look at four words that have changed Craig Groeschel’s life and he says we’ll change yours.

So one is renew.

Two is remain.

Three is acknowledge.

And four is ask.

All right so we have these four renew, remain, acknowledge, and ask.

This is kind of put towards the end of this section, and he really doesn’t go into further depth on these, but what I’ll tell you from looking ahead in the book is, I believe next episode, we will discuss these four in depth.

So I believe he’s trying to link the two sections together, and that’s why he mentions this at the end, but at first, when I was looking at the material, I was kind of lost as why he just kind of highlights these and leaves them there.

Exercise

So we have an exercise uh says to illustrate the power of Galatians 5 16 and 17 in your life.

Complete the following sentences. Use the pattern as many times as you need. All right, so it says in my flesh I constantly struggle with and you would fill in the blank, but in my spirit I want to fill in the blank so that’s the exercise.

Principle

For the principle for this section is:

Willpower doesn’t work, but God’s power does, and his power is available, accessible, active, and abundant.

The passage of scripture Galatians 5 16 and 17 it says, “So I say walk by the spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh for the flesh desires what is contrary to the spirit and the spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”

It’s All You – Introduction

Craig Groeschel opens the section with a story about his friend Paco. The two of them were at the gym doing a chest burnout. After lifting a bunch of very heavy weights, you switch to a lower weight and perform high-rep bench presses until you are worn out. At the end of the workout, the goal was to bench the bar fifty times. Paco was really into this and kept encouraging Craig along the way. He would yell, “Keep going. It’s all you!” Toward the end, Craig saw that Paco had control of the bar, so he let go, and magically the bar kept going up and down. Eventually, Paco realized what was happening, and they both began laughing.

“…at the end of my power, I discover God’s power. His power is always there. When I am weak, he is strong.”1
