Triggers Are Everywhere! It’s not just a catchy title. Triggers are around every corner. If you often find yourself in a fight or flight mode, this statement has never seemed more accurate. This week, we’re focusing on an important topic: recognizing and addressing our emotional triggers.

Understanding Our Triggers

As humans, we tend to shy away from anything that causes us pain or discomfort. When we encounter a trigger, we naturally cut it off. We avoid that person, stop going to that church, or unfollow a particular social media account. Instead of getting curious about these triggers, we shut them down before anything bad happens.

In “Triggers Are Everywhere,” Debra Fileta explains that triggers are like “emotional sore spots.” Just as physical bruises are sensitive to touch, emotional wounds from our past can cause pain when pressed upon by present experiences.

The Healing Invitation

Most of us dislike pain or discomfort, so I understand why we shut triggers down. But what if triggers are the very thing that could move us toward healing? What if they reveal our sore spots? What if these emotional wounds in our lives are begging for our attention?

While our culture often encourages us to avoid triggers, this approach may prevent us from addressing deeper issues. Instead, we can view triggers as invitations to healing. Debra suggests:

“What if triggers were the very thing that invited us into the process of healing?”

Practical Steps

  1. Identify your triggers: Pay attention to situations, words, or experiences that provoke strong negative emotions.
  2. Reflect: Consider what past experiences these triggers might be connected to.
  3. Seek support: Share your discoveries with trusted friends, family, or professionals.
  4. Pray: Invite God into your healing process. As Colossians 3:15 reminds us, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.”

Remember, healing is a journey, not a destination. It is not linear. By acknowledging and working through our triggers, we open ourselves to allow God to work, bringing us peace and healing. When we are brave enough to step into a Godly community, we allow God to work in and through others.
